Best mobile phone for blogging

I am going to need some help with this one.
Already thinking some month ahead, I am browsing different mobile sites and forums to gather information and feedback in my search for my next mobile phone. As blogging has become more part of my life, I am looking for a a phone that is best suitable for mobile blogging too.

I made a list of the requirements I am looking for at this moment. [please shoot me some extra specifics I must keep in mind!]

  1. No Nokia - Okay let me explain. For me it is the same reason as working with Mac. Where my personal intuition should stroke with the device’s intuitive interface, Nokia simply keeps bothering me in detail.
  2. Max 150 grams, preferrably less - I hate it when my mobile makes my clothing go askew and i hate those beltclips, so weight is important.
  3. Fast responding and quick (learning) text input - Full qwerty, simple abc or text-recognition touchscreen, I want my device to respond and display quickly what I enter and it must be able to learn new words quickly too (adding new words totally stinks with some brands).
  4. Tri-band at least - I happen to travel every now and then…
  5. Wi-Fi - A must… If I can skip quircky GPRS and UMTS connections (be it for the costs alone) and connect locally to a nice a speedy wi-fi network, decision is quickly made.
  6. Design - I am a sucker for that, as long as it is functional too.
  7. Web-browser - Kinda necessary when blogging mobily.
  8. RSS reader - While this can be done in a web-browser, one integrated in the mobile interface might optimize its userfriendliness.
  9. Symbian OS - I am a Mac user, need I say more?
  10. iSync - Bluetooth or wire, as long as it does the synchronizing quickly.

Still dubbing between a mobile phone and a PDA. While the need for a camera and stuff like music playback are not on the list of requirements, I will not omit them, but there is no real need.

At this moment I am looking through the specs of the P990i of SonyEricsson, which seems to meet all requirements. The M600i had my eye first, but sadly it lacks Wi-Fi.

So, I need some feedback:

  • What phone do you use?
  • Do you blog using your mobile?
  • If you could choose, what phone WOULD you use?

Looking forward to some good suggestions and pointers!

  • Good call with the Palm OS. I’ve been reading some surveys and the Treo’s keep winning in overall usability and interface, although with the upcoming Symbian 3rd edition OS, Nokia will still have the edge on software choices. Definately go with Wifi!

  • Well, as the P990i has Symbian OS 9.1. What I read about it, I think it is great.

Yeah wifi… where are we without it? With the current development, I really wonder what things will look like in the near future.

The new Treo has caught my eye too, still digging for some more info on this all.

  • who loves sony-ericsson… call me! (212)6971519

  • Okay, as SonyEricsson simply is not providing what I am looking for, I think I am going to settle for the Nokia E70

Does anybody have experience with this phone?
    Please share!

  • I thought you definitely didn’t want a Nokia?

You are right… but fact is that with what I want I simply do not have much options, and this Nokia’s S60 software offers enough possibilities for personal tweaking.

Read a lot of reviews on the P990i and I was really disappointed, as well as many of its users… way too buggy software.

Another thing is that this keyboard is a real plus.

We will see. Have not taken the final decision, yet.

  • jan, i have the same problem as you. but i also want 3g amd wifi not so much as we have few free wifi in my country. i was also considering the m600 but it looks hard to use. my one of my friends recommended the e62. no pocket pc phone for you? that would solve my problem but the prices of those units are way over my budget.

  • It has been a while but in the meantime I have made up my mind… I will buy the Nokia N95 as soon as it is available.

Then, the only concession I am doing is not having a full qwerty keyboard… but the features on this device are simply amazing. And the built in GPS and mapping software really shows off.

  • What did you settle for in the end? I have the same dillema facing me now and want a phone I can take anywhere and blog with.

  • Since he’s waiting for the N95, he prob hasn’t bought one yet. One more you should consider, Jan, is the E90. It’s just been announced in 3GSM. Might also interest you.

  • Is there a device that I can use that is perhaps not a phone but is just a blogging tool, which I can use to write stuff up on the road?I travel a load but usually I get to places where I can upload and ideally I want something I can write with that’s lightweight and cheap and has a decent keyboard for writing text, on the cheap. Does this ultimate blogging tool exist?

  • Indeed, I have not yet had the pleasure of buying one! [they should be here somewhere in March '07, costing way too much...]

The ultimate blogging tool… I think you would end-up with something like a Flybook. But those are really expensive.

Cheap: get a 12 inch (or less) secondhand laptop with the characteristics you want and run ECTO on it… Then you can prepare your posts and when you hook up to the internet you can post all at once.

  • It is a nice piece of kit but still doesn’t fit all the criteria - too expensive for a start. How difficult can it be to make a text writer that is cheap and cool!

  • When you find it, let me know! =)

  • Jan why don’t me and you just MAKE one ourselves and market it. I’d be up for it.

  • Hahaha… No for real, I am already busy with too many things, this would be a bit over the edge.

But the thought is interesting. Still, personlly I would love to have a secondhand ibook 12″, maxxed out, put ubuntu on it and carry it with me. For on the road blogging I would always prefer a full-size keyboard over a thumb-board.

  • I am using an ibook. it’s a bit too heavy to be carrying anywhere. maybe one of those pocket translators?

  • Thumb pad on those translators. A board that is about the size of an A5 pad would be perfect or one of those flip out ones you can get for palms. But Palm is too expensive and has too many bits I dont need. Just a TEXT EDITOR! How hard can that BE!?
